Scorched 01
This shape was one of the first things I made on a CNC router. I’ve developed it through several iterations since then. To my eye, it’s quite refined now. It feels great to pick up because of the hollow under the rim. The inside shape is a portion of an ellipsoid. There’s something about this shape that is just ‘right’.
This piece is made from a chunk of fiddle-back rosewood sourced from a salvaged log. I finished the rim by scorching it with a blowtorch. The scorching frames and contrasts to the warm colour and grain of the rest beautifully. It’s also a nod to the late 2019 fires that swept through the district so destructively just after I acquired this timber.
It’s finished with a non-toxic wax, so it’s totally food safe.
