Scorched 02
This shape was one of the first things I made on a CNC router. I’ve developed it through several iterations since then. To my eye, it’s quite refined now. It feels great to pick up because of the hollow under the rim. The inside shape is a portion of an ellipsoid. There’s something about this shape that is just ‘right’.
This piece is made from a chunk of firewood. It was a beam in a Sydney house before that. Not entirely sure of the species, but it’s defiantly a eucalypt. It’s hard and dense. I finished the rim and underside by scorching it with a blowtorch. It seemed appropriate since this used to be firewood! The scorching frames and contrasts to warm colour and grain of the interior beautifully.
It’s finished with a non-toxic wax, so there is no problem using it for food.
